Complete eye Examinations
A comprehensive assessment of your visual and refractive system including a review of ocular health. This process comprises of a number of tests and screenings that provide an overall evaluation in order to manage eyecare requirements. These tests and screenings include vision, colour, retinal and pressure tests and are done by our experienced Optometrists and backed up by our state-of-the-art diagnostic and screening technology.
Contact lens examination and wearer training
This examination first assesses tolerance and visual acuity. An optometrist will then fit various visually corrected contact lenses on the eye to assess suitability. Contact lens wearers will then be taught the correct techniques for insertion and removal and are provided with aftercare tips and best practices for the responsible use of contact lenses. The examination and training are done by our experienced Optometrists during a one on one consultation focussed on the patients specific needs and challenges.
Driver’s Licence Screenings
These screenings are done by one of our Optometrists to assess the visual requirements as laid down by the Department of Transport. Tonkil Optometrists provide this service free of charge to the public.
Our Optometrists will perform this screening to assess the Intra Ocular Pressure (IOP) and health of the eye. This is an important screening tool as it is able to indicate possible onset of Glaucoma or IOP disruption in the eye. Glaucoma is a common ocular disease and is potentially blinding. It is easily preventable with regular screenings and can be controlled if detected.
This screening is dedicated to taking a live photograph of the back of the eye. This is the only area inside the human body visible to healthcare professionals without the need for surgery. By looking at the Retina/Fundus (back of the eye), Optometrists can identify systemic diseases such as hypertension or diabetes as well as Ocular diseases such as Glaucoma and Macula Degeneration. It is during this test that the Optic nerve (which leads to the brain), arteries, veins and other nerves are viewed.
Our Optometrists with the aid of Opthalmoscopes or Slit-Lamps are able to view the anterior segment which includes the lens of the eye. We can identify any opacification or clouding of the lens, a symptom that leads to cataracts.
Visual screening for competency certificates
Our Optometrists are able to assist in completing all visual requirements for forklift permits, boating/skippers’ licences as well as aviation visual competencies.
Dry Eye Management
Dry eyes are multifactorial and include disease of the tears and ocular surfaces which often result in discomfort and visual disturbances. Our team of Optometrists are able to assist with advice and management on various cleaning treatments , eye drops, ocular supplements to relieve signs and symptoms of Blepharitis and Dry Eye Syndrome.
